The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has recently greenlit resolutions establishing two new Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), as per an announcement during a meeting in Baton Rouge this July. The Flatwoods Savanna WMA, positioned in Allen Parish, spans 426 acres nestled between the towns of Reeves and LeBlanc. Meanwhile, the Bogue Chitto WMA claims 1,642.5 acres of wilderness, located just south of Franklinton near the Bogue Chitto State Park.

Both of these newly minted conservation areas are the broader strategy by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) to protect and sustain the state’s diverse ecosystems. It’s a move that not only safeguards the land but also provides people with opportunities to engage in non-consumptive activities like hiking, bird-watching, and nature studies. Backed by financial impetus from the Louisiana Outdoor Fund, created by the 2022 legislative session, these WMAs are at the frontline, of the state's conservation efforts.

As noted by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, this initiative is the product of collaboration with several environmental organizations. The Trust for Public Land and groups such as Atira Conservation, the EJK Foundation, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Foundation/Restore the Earth Foundation, Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation, and The AES Corporation have all played parts in bringing these WMAs to fruition.
