Biotech giant Biogen Inc. is deepening its roots in North Carolina with a 2 billion investment to expand their manufacturing operations at Research Triangle Park (RTP), where the company has had a presence since 1995, as reported by CBS 17. North Carolina, already home to a burgeoning life sciences sector, is set to benefit from this substantial financial commitment expected to fuel the advancement of Biogen’s late-stage clinical pipeline.

The investment comes in response to President Donald Trump's tariff threats, which aim to encourage domestic manufacturing. A move by multiple drugmakers, including Novartis, to shore up their U.S. manufacturing facilities comes after the President first signaled a move towards implementing tariffs, which he recently stated could become effective as soon as Aug. 1. Biogen's decision to expand is part of a larger trend among biopharma companies, as outlined in detail by BioSpace.

Cited for its commitment to manufacturing innovation and community collaboration, Biogen's head of pharmaceutical operations and technology, Nicole Murphy, emphasized the company's goal to modernize manufacturing through automation and artificial intelligence. "With this investment, we will modernize and expand our manufacturing capability to enable our pipeline and provide resilient patient supply, while continuing to support the skilled and dedicated community of life sciences talent in North Carolina," Murphy FiercePharma.

The evolution of Biogen's RTP site includes the expansion of antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) capabilities and infrastructure. This technology is central to the development of gene therapies and cancer treatments, an area of significant growth within the pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, the company plans to establish clinical and commercial multi-platform fill-finish capabilities, which are integral to the drug preparation process. Biogen's North Carolina footprint is not insignificant, with over 1,500 manufacturing and technical employees, and more than 400 skilled contractors working across its Wake and Durham County campuses, reinforcing its position as a major employer in the state.

Alongside its financial investment, Biogen has also started construction on its eighth RTP facility, with an estimated $195 million being funneled into the new 197,000-square-foot factory. Despite this growth, there are no guarantees that the new plant will be utilized to its full capacity once opened later this year. The shifting sands of Biogen's strategic focus have led to reconsideration of how this space will be utilized, as the company reviews several alternative uses for the facility, indicating a flexible approach to its infrastructure in the state.
