As Boston's trash continues to pile up, Mayor Michelle Wu is taking a firm stance against Republic Services amid an ongoing strike by the company's workers. Starting yesterday, the city will issue filed directly to the waste removal giant for any trash not collected, as per Mayor Wu's directive. The mayor expects Republic Services to shoulder the burden of fines that have been accruing since July 7 when the city resumed enforcement after a brief hiatus, according to a letter cited by Boston.com.

The strike, which began July 1, has been initiated by members of Teamsters Local 25 seeking competitive wages and enhanced benefits. Approximately 2,000 workers across the country have since joined the movement, causing significant service disruptions. Although Boston does not directly contract with Republic, many local businesses that do, have been affected, with overflowing dumpsters leading to public health concerns, and, dissatisfaction amongst those enterprises, which are also being penalized for violations born out of uncollected trash, as reported by Mayor Wu.

Republic Services, on their end, claims that the Teamsters have hindered their ability to collect waste, alleging harassment, threats, and vandalism by union members. However, recent legal setbacks for the company have occurred, with a federal judge denying their motion for a temporary restraining order against the union last Monday, as Boston.com details. Teamsters Local 25 President Tom Mari, in response to the legal developments, said Republic "misled the court."

Despite numerous negotiation attempts, a resolution does not seem imminent. The last bargaining session failed without scheduling a follow-up, deepening the impasse between Republic and the union. Mayor Wu's administration has made it clear that Republic needs to honor their commitments; "Private trash collection serves a critical role in maintaining clean streets, public health, and a livable City, and we expect Republic to fulfill its obligations to customers immediately," Wu wrote, as mentioned in a report by NBC Boston
