The streets of Boston's District B-2 may just have become a little safer for its women residents. The Boston Police Department (BPD), through its District B-2 and Bureau of Community Engagement, has successfully concluded its Spring Women’s Self-Defense Class. Providing more than just techniques, the program offered local women a chance to empower themselves in a very practical way.
Throughout the class, the participants showed up in force, week after week, to not only learn but to eagerly engage with more than 20 of their peers. They were taught how to effectively handle a spectrum of confrontational scenarios. "The energy, dedication, and support throughout the program made it a great example of Community Policing in action," described a recent article from the BPD.
The initiative received higher-than-expected participation, with officials suggesting that strong community demand for personal safety resources contributed to its success. In response, the BPD has announced that self-defense classes will resume this fall. The department cited ongoing interest as a key factor in the decision.
For those in the community looking to actively participate in the upcoming self-defense courses, information is readily available. Prospective attendees can simply reach out to the District B-2 Community Service Office at 617-343-4278 or the Bureau of Community Engagement at 617-343-4345. It’s an opportunity for women in the area to not only learn self-defense but to also engage in a broader conversation about safety and empowerment in their own neighborhood.
