Residents of Boulder are being called upon to shape their city's future, particularly in the Civic Area, known as the heart of the community. A Civic Area Phase Two Engagement Event is scheduled for Monday, July 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Central Park, announced by the City of Boulder. This is not just a bureaucratic tick-box exercise, but a real chance to influence the decision-making process on an initiative that dates back to the 2015 Civic Area Plan.

The event aims to be a family-friendly affair with interactive stations, questionnaires for community insights, and the chance for Boulder's denizens to get involved in the design process for their civic space. Children can be entertained with a "Meadow Music" concert by local kid-favorites, Jeff & Paige, and popsicles will be on hand to sweeten the deal, as per the City of Boulder. But, this isn't simply a ploy to gather locals, it's a push for participatory design grounded in community input gathered earlier this year.

The City has articulated a clear vision for the Civic Area: it should be an accessible gathering place, offering a diverse range of activities, and enhanced security. Emphasizing the importance of these spaces, Shihomi Kuriyagawa, Boulder’s Senior Landscape Architect, told the City of Boulder, "The City of Boulder looks forward to programming our parks to promote connection to nature. This popup creates a different way to activate outdoor spaces and for our youths, builds confidence and supports both the physical and mental health."
