In a significant nod to their increased safety measures, Caltrain has been awarded the 2025 Commuter Rail Safety Gold Award by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). This prestigious accolade is reserved for an agency with outstanding safety achievements. According to an announcement by Caltrain, this year's prize recognizes the railroad's innovative initiatives to ensure the safety of operators, pedestrians, and passengers.
Caltrain's safety-centric initiatives are seemingly paying off, introducing groundbreaking safety technologies at various crossings. Predominantly, AI-based tech installed at rail crossings, specifically pointing to locations such as Broadway in Burlingame and Churchill Avenue in Palo Alto, has been instrumental. This tech has to allow in-depth monitoring and proactive alerting for any lingering vehicles or debris, thereby preventing possible collisions, as detailed by Caltrain.
“Safety is paramount at Caltrain, and the culture of safety we practice permeates every aspect of our service,” stated Michelle Bouchard, Caltrain’s Executive Director, as per Caltrain's press release. Ensuring that the riding public and the employees who maintain and run the trains remain unharmed is at the forefront of the agency's mission.
