An employee of the Harris Teeter store in Charlotte is facing a felony larceny charge after allegedly embezzling over $11,000. Queen City News reports that Brittany Allison Gardner, 35, was responsible for handling company funds but is accused of diverting $11,170 for her personal use. This alleged subversion of responsibility led to charges of larceny by an employee.
While the exact store location was initially unconfirmed, subsequent information from WCNC Charlotte has identified the Harris Teeter on Davis Lake Parkway as the site of the theft. This is the same location that suffered significant damage due to an alleged arson earlier in the year. According to WCNC Charlotte, an asset protection manager revealed Gardner was caught on camera taking money and later admitted to the theft during the most recent incident on June 5.
Gardner was apprehended and has since posted bond after her arrest. Making her first court appearance yesterday, her case is expected to be back in court in August. Channel 9 reports that Gardner was charged with felony larceny by an employee following the investigation by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The loss, totaling $11,170, took place over multiple occasions between February 9 and June 5, as per WCNC Charlotte. During her tenure, Gardner, having counted and supposedly secured the money into the store safe, reportedly accessed the funds afterward. While the official could note that there were 10 separate occasions of this activity, Gardner claimed to have no precise recollection of the exact amounts or dates involved in the alleged thefts.
