A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer has been charged with communicating threats following a confrontation that took place Tuesday evening. CMPD Officer Jazmin Featherstone and another individual, identified as Shawn Marie Rice, were involved in an incident that reportedly included an assault with a deadly weapon, though no injuries were documented.
Following the altercation, officers responded to the scene, and all parties involved were interviewed by detectives. The investigation led to charges being filed. Officer Featherstone has been placed on unpaid administrative leave by the CMPD as the Internal Affairs Division conducts an investigation to closely look into the matter. According to a statement from CMPD, Officer Featherstone, who was off-duty at the time of the incident, now faces a criminal summons for Communicating Threats.
Shawn Marie Rice received a warrant for Assault by Pointing a Gun, Damage to Property, and Communicating Threats, stemming from the same event. In light of the charges, the CMPD has voiced its commitment to maintaining high conduct standards for officers regardless of their duty status. "The criminal charge filed against Officer Featherstone is concerning," Police Chief Jennings expressed in a statement. "We will not tolerate actions that compromise public trust or the integrity of this agency."
The CMPD also emphasized that officers are expected to uphold the law, just as they are to enforce it. Officer Featherstone was hired in October 2023 and is assigned to the Eastway Division. Details of the incident that led to the charges can be found in the report number 20250729-1903-01.
