With the July 4 holiday typically signaling an influx of stray pets, Cincinnati Animal CARE is already stretched to its limits. The shelter has announced that it is operating at full capacity, housing a staggering 477 dogs and 283 cats across its two facilities and foster homes. As the city braces for an expected surge in stray animals, the shelter is rapidly trying to make room for new intakes by hosting a free adoption event this upcoming weekend.
Thanks to the sponsorship from the Cincy Property Twins, potential pet parents can adopt any animal without cost on July 5 and 6 from either the 3949 Colerain Avenue location (dogs only) or the 4210 Dane Avenue facility (dogs and cats). In an effort to expedite the adoption process, "all adoption fees—including Hamilton County license fees—will be waived for ALL pets,” said Meaghan Colville, via Hamilton County Ohio, Shelter Director of Cincinnati Animal CARE, as reported.
In a unique move to entice more families to adopt, the shelter is also joining forces with local event planner Surprise, Surprise for a promotional tie-in with the Warner Bros. movie "Superman: Legacy." Anyone involving themselves with the shelter by adopting, fostering, volunteering, or donating before the end of Sunday stands a chance to win tickets to a special screening on July 8. These interactive opportunities could be the game-changer that Cincinnati Animal CARE needs to inspire community engagement.
In the spirit of the "Superman: Legacy" theme, the shelter has started giving rescue dogs names of iconic characters from the franchise. This light-hearted approach comes at a time when intakes have outpaced adoptions despite the shelter's best efforts. Last month's records show 460 dogs brought in and 288 adopted, a disconnect that Cincinnati Animal CARE is keen to address with foster-to-adopt arrangements also being offered with waived fees during the event.
