Cincinnati's fire department is facing scrutiny as Assistant Fire Chief Sherman Smith has been placed on paid administrative leave amid an ongoing internal investigation. The details surrounding the inquiry are scant, with no reasons publicly disclosed thus far.
Smith, a key figure in the city's fire prevention division, was placed on leave by Fire Chief McKinley, according to LOCAL12. This division is critical in overseeing fire reports, prevention, special inspections, and fire investigations, including a prominent recent arson case involving the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge.
The specifics of Smith's suspension are not clear, and according to the Cincinnati Fire Fighters Union Local 48, neither Smith nor the union has received information regarding the cause for the leave or the nature of the investigation. "Local 48 is actively working with City administration to obtain clarity on the matter. We will continue to advocate for transparency, due process, and fair treatment for all of our members, regardless of rank," Union President Joe Elliot told FOX19.
Matters within the department are further complicated by a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by former Fire Chief Michael Washington in 2023. With a jury trial for this case set for September 29, Smith’s suspension adds another layer to the Cincinnati Fire Department's challenges. The department and the city of Cincinnati remain under close watch as these legal proceedings unfold, WCPO posted on social media.
