According to a recent release, the 'Unidentified Remains Task Force' is a coalition of experts from several Coconino County departments, joining forces to identify unknown deceased individuals and, in doing so, offer long-sought answers to bereaved families.
Ammon Barker, County Attorney, highlighted the importance of the task force in a statement obtained by Coconino County's official announcement, saying, "We're not just solving cold cases — we're restoring identities, returning dignity to those who have died without a name, and getting answers families have waited years to find." The task force boasts professionals from the Medical Examiner's Office, Health and Human Services Department, Information Technology Department, Sheriff's Office, and County Attorney's Office, all of whom will bring their expertise to bear on cases that, in some instances, have puzzled officials for over half a century.
According to Coconino County, these cases are being reexamined with a variety of modern investigative tools that could end decades of uncertainty for some families. Matt Fowler, Chief Information Officer, referenced the technological advances that the task force will leverage, including DNA sequencing and forensic genealogy. "Technology is evolving at an extraordinary pace," he explained, advocating for the task force's potential to utilize growing databases like NamUs, CODIS, and FGG.
Moreover, the county is actively seeking the community's involvement — particularly from those who have missing family members but have not yet provided DNA samples. "You might hold the one detail that connects the dots," stated Bret Axlund, County Sheriff. To facilitate this, Coconino County plans to hold DNA collection events and informational sessions designed to educate and promote trust among citizens. In addition, they are providing dedicated family liaisons and victim advocates to guide those affected through the process.
