On a recent wave of civic engagement, Governor Polis has lauded Colorado's robust public participation following the release of a survey that drew responses from over 80,000 state residents. The survey, which sought public input on the potential construction of a new walkway to celebrate Colorado's 150th birthday, concluded with a decisive result: Coloradans decidedly rejected the proposal. As obtained by Colorado Governor's Office, Governor Polis announced, "Coloradans were clear, and I will stop the pedestrian walkway proposal in its tracks."
The Governor seemed all but ready to personally ensure the project's cessation, stating, "If needed, I will chain myself to the Capitol plaza to prevent it from being built," as per Colorado Governor's Office. The dedication to follow through on public opinion stands as an example of political responsiveness, especially when the majority, 93.9% of the survey respondents, voiced a no to the proposed pedestrian walkway.
With 2026 marking dual historic commemorations, the country’s 250th and Colorado’s 150th anniversaries, Governor Polis emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the statewide celebrations. A bipartisan initiative, the 250/150 Commission, was established to create a unified statewide celebration strategy. Respondents to the survey expressed a preference for honoring both anniversaries equally, showcasing a broader sense of national and state pride. 34,694 votes were cast in favor of equal excitement for both anniversaries.
