An Oakland County father's life was tragically cut short this past weekend when a police chase culminated in a fatal collision. Alex Habib, 28, an innocent Uber driver and restaurant worker, was fatally struck in Warren last Saturday. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Roseville police initiated the chase after a 16-year-old suspect allegedly stole a vehicle and fled. The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. at the junction of 11 Mile and Van Dyke in Warren, where Habib, a father of two, lost his life.
The chase, which began in Roseville, quickly escalated, leading to the multi-car crash that ended Habib's life. Habib was described as "just one of those guys, when he's in the building, he just brought everybody up a couple of clicks," by Tom Brady, owner of Jim Brady's restaurant, where Habib was employed. As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, Brady intends to organize a fundraiser to help the victim's family during this difficult time, and a GoFundMe page has already been set up to aid in covering funeral expenses and to support Habib's children.
The family mourns the loss of a dedicated man who was passionate about his work and his role as father to a 1-year-old daughter and a 3-month-old son. Family members have raised questions regarding the necessity and safety of the police chase that led to the disaster. "I know that my son-in-law is not standing here next to me over a stolen car. That’s how I look at it, and it’s senseless," said Dale Durant, Habib's father-in-law, in an interview obtained by ClickOnDetroit.
Responses from Roseville Police regarding the circumstances of the chase have yet to be provided. On the social front, the community has rallied together to show support. Over $67,000 has been raised on GoFundMe to assist Habib's bereaved family, as per Macomb Daily.
