In a heartfelt ceremony this morning, the Comstock Park Post Office was dedicated to the late Capt. Miguel Justin Nava, a U.S. Marine who tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash during a training mission in February 2024. As reported by MLive, the post office at 4040 Leland Ave. NE has been officially renamed in his honor. The tribute symbolizes both the community's respect and the enduring impact of Nava's service.
Capt. Nava, who was 28 at the time of the accident, and four other Marines were victims of the crash near San Diego, amidst a historic storm. A native of Comstock Park, Nava was remembered as a standout student and athlete at Comstock Park High School, playing on the football and soccer teams and engaging in student government. "I am honored to join the family of Capt. Miguel Justin Nava – along with so many of his friends and community leaders – to commemorate the beloved student, accomplished athlete and military hero raised in Comstock Park," USPS District Manager Donald Dombrow Jr. shared in a statement obtained by MLive.
The renaming initiative was driven by U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten who introduced a bill to Congress, which was later enacted by President Joe Biden in January. At the renaming ceremony, she noted, "I knew immediately I would want to do everything I could in my power to help this family and honor the legacy of this brave hero," according to a FOX 17 interview. The bill received bipartisan support, reflecting an acknowledgment of Capt. Nava's ultimate sacrifice.
The ceremony was particularly poignant for Nava's loved ones. "Thank you for remembering our son," said Capt. Nava's father, Javier Nava, "for celebrating his life, and giving us this incredible gift," as per statements made to FOX 17. The plaque honoring Capt. Nava will now reside within the lobby of the post office, offering a daily reminder of his commitment and contributions. A local high school plans to add Nava to its own honor wall later in the year, as noted by WOOD TV.
In addition to commemorating Capt. Nava, the solemn occasion also paid tribute to the other Marines who perished in the crash: LCpl. Donovan Davis, Sgt. Alec Langen, Capt. Jack Casey, and Capt. Benjamin Moulton. Together, they are remembered for their dedication to service, and their individual legacies continue to leave a lasting impression on communities across the nation. Capt. Nava is survived by his parents, Lisa and Javier Nava; his brother, Nikolas Nava; and his wife, Ryann Nava, and son, Luca Nava.
