Atlanta's leadership shuffle continues as Mayor Andre Dickens appoints Courtney English as the city's new Interim Chief of Staff, in a strategic move following the departure of Odie Donald for Richmond, Virginia. In this role, English will not only handle the Mayor’s legislative agenda but also act as the primary conduit to the Atlanta City Council and oversee areas ranging from Legislative and External Affairs to Cultural Affairs and Sustainability, according to the City of Atlanta's official announcement.

Beyond his existing duties as Chief Policy Officer, English's expanded responsibilities will now include a broad spectrum of the city's executive functions, including Communications and Cultural Affairs, in addition to managing pressing city priorities like Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Film and Entertainment, but and not least the Department of Labor and Employment Services. English's promotion comes after significant achievements, such as driving the affordable housing initiatives that brought forth 11,000 units to the city and contributing to a substantial 56 percent drop in youth-related crime in 2023 through the Year of the Youth initiative.

Emphasizing his ongoing commitment, English remarked, "I deeply appreciate Mayor Dickens' continued trust and confidence in me, and I am honored to serve the City of Atlanta in his Administration," highlighting his intent to prioritize child well-being and urban prosperity. "I will be hyper-focused on executing the Mayor’s vision of making Atlanta the best place in the country to raise a child through both our ongoing public policy initiatives and legislative priorities," English added, as noted by the city's official website.

English, an Atlanta native and an advocate for education and affordable housing, boasts a background that intimately connects public service and community development, during which he rose from a classroom teacher to a prominent city leader, even serving as the chairman of the Atlanta Board of Education at a record-setting young age, he navigated non-profit landscapes to improve the provision of affordable housing with essential wrap-around services for residents, English’s educational pedigree includes a bachelor's degree from Morehouse College and a master’s degree in organizational psychology and leadership from Columbia University.
