Yesterday marked a significant milestone in Cuyahoga County as local officials and MAGNET celebrated the creation of 3,000 manufacturing careers—an achievement reflecting the collaborative efforts of the public and private sectors. This initiative, which is a product of the Cuyahoga County Manufacturing Sector Partnership (MSP), has been instrumental in boosting the county's manufacturing industry and economy.
In a move to significantly build up a strong local workforce, over the past three years, Cuyahoga County has invested $5 million to support manufacturing workforce development in partnership with MAGNET. This has amounted to filling 2,750 open positions with candidates who now bring in more than $2 million in incremental income and sales tax revenue to the county annually, as reported by Cuyahoga County.
Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne highlighted the importance of the manufacturing sector by saying, "The manufacturing industry is the backbone of our region’s economy, creating high quality, well-paying jobs, and driving innovation." He further pledged the county's ongoing commitment to fostering the growth of local industries and upholding a legacy of economic development and industrial advancement. These sentiments were echoed by Cuyahoga County Council President Dale Miller, who emphasized Cleveland's historical link with manufacturing strength and the region's dedication to building future talent through such partnerships.
An array of outcomes over the last three years has been spotlighted, including the involvement of over 8,300 students in MAGNET’s Youth Manufacturing Experience and placing 250 formerly incarcerated adults into jobs through the ACCESS to Manufacturing Careers initiative. Ethan Karp, President and CEO of MAGNET, contended, "This celebration is about much more than numbers," pointing out the profound impact on the individuals and communities involved. "It’s about real people who have found stability, opportunity, and purpose through manufacturing. It’s about communities that are stronger and employers who are thriving because we built a better system—together," Karp told Cuyahoga County.
The MSP's success is also integrated into the broader canvas of Ohio's manufacturing scene as part of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association’s Industry Sector Partnership Network. In strengthening this network, the initiative has allowed not just high school students, but also returning citizens, to secure their place in one of the region's most vital industries.
