Big moves are being made on the international stage, as Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson sets his sights on Tanzania this week to bolster trade and fortify economic relations. According to an official bulletin from the City of Dallas, Johnson is scheduled to leave tomorrow for an eight-day expedition aimed at tapping into new opportunities for trade growth between the vibrant city of Dallas and the East African nation.
Johnson's itinerary includes stops in three Tanzanian cities – Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and Arusha. The mayor, whose plane takes off from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport tomorrow, will hit the ground in Zanzibar two days later. “Dallas and Tanzania have long enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship, with a Tanzanian trade office opening in our city last year. I look forward to strengthening that bond and opening up new opportunities for long-term trade growth between Dallas and Tanzania,” Mayor Johnson told the City of Dallas.
The outreach is not without groundwork; in May 2024, Mayor Johnson launched the Tanzanian American Chamber of Commerce (TACC) in Dallas. The city was handpicked to host the TACC because of its economic strength, strategic positioning, and burgeoning reputation as a national financial powerhouse. This latest trip signals continued efforts to weave tighter economic threads between the U.S. and Tanzania, following a series of engagements that began with a virtual meeting in 2021 and led to the establishment of a Tanzanian presence in Dallas with a signed Memorandum of Understanding in April 2022.
