The Seattle City Council has chosen Debora Juarez to fill the District 5 seat, a role that oversees parts of north Seattle including neighborhoods like Bitter Lake and Northgate. According to an article from Seattle City Council's official website, the decision came after a round of voting that secured Juarez the necessary majority for the appointment.
Effective immediately, Juarez will return to a role that she was elected to twice before, "Representing District 5 was a great honor when I was elected twice and for some reason this feels much more emotional," Juarez expressed in her oath-taking remarks. Council President Sara Nelson chimed in, acknowledging the importance of having the Council at full capacity, “Having the Council back at full strength is vital as we continue our work on significant legislation including the Comprehensive Plan and the challenges of the upcoming City budget,” Nelson said, as noted by the Seattle City Council's blog.
Previously elected to the Seattle City Council in 2015 and re-elected in 2019, Juarez fills the vacancy left by Cathy Moore, who resigned on July 8. The appointment will see her through to November 2026 when the seat will be up for election again. Juarez will inherit Moore's committee assignments which includes chairing the House and Human Services Committee and serving as vice chair on other key committees.
The nomination process, which mandated a 20-day search as per the City Charter, drew 22 candidates, with public forums and discussions culminating in Juarez's appointment. Councilmember Rob Saka offered his endorsement, “Debora Juarez will be an outstanding Councilmember for D5, and I’m confident she will hit the ground running to serve this diverse district and its urgent priorities. I look forward to partnering with Councilmember Juarez and want to thank the other five exceptional nominees for their desire to serve,” according to the same news release.
