A 6-year-old boy drowned at Belle Isle Park in Detroit on Saturday evening. Michigan State Police said he was at a family reunion and was last seen near Shelter No. 2, close to a waterway connected to Lake Tacoma. The boy, who was autistic, had wandered away from a bounce house. When family members noticed he was missing around 7:20 p.m., they searched the area and then called police, according to The Detroit News. About 30 minutes later, he was found unresponsive in the water by an adult and a child.

A young boy died after being pulled from the water at a Michigan park. Conservation officers and Department of Natural Resources park rangers gave CPR until the Detroit Fire Department arrived and continued efforts. He was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital. Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said, “Our heart goes out to this little boy’s family and also the first responders and community members on scene who did everything they could to try and save this child’s life,” as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.

The Michigan State Police reminded the public about water safety after a recent drowning. They advised watching children closely, wearing life jackets while boating, and being careful with alcohol near water. “A drowning can happen quickly and quietly and is often not how it is portrayed on TV,” the agency said, as mentioned by Mlive.
