The incident, which was first flagged late Sunday night, has resulted in the closure of both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane adjacent to the Maxwell House Coffee plant, according to reports from First Coast News.
Initially appearing insignificant, measuring roughly 3 feet across, the cave-in exposed an infrastructure vulnerability requiring a more invasive excavation. Staring down into the 12 to 14 feet void, the necessity for a complete sewer main replacement was determined, as explained by News4JAX, with the utility's spokesperson Myers Vasquez stating, "We’ll keep on at it until we can get this repaired as quickly as possible."
As the cave-in's consequences ripple through the downtown's traffic patterns, JEA insists their teams are working diligently to mitigate the disruption. Speaking to the sheer scale of the problem, JEA spokesperson Karen McAllister outlined to Action News Jax that while the investigation into the cause of the cave-in is ongoing, they are proactively advancing with the repairs.
