Georgia's healthcare landscape is set for a change as Governor Brian P. Kemp appoints Dr. Dean Burke as the new Commissioner of the Department of Community Health (DCH), a move taking effect from August 1, after the current Commissioner Russel Carlson steps down to move into the private sector.
In a recent announcement referenced by the Governor's office, Governor Kemp praised Dr. Burke for his service and vast experience in the medical and healthcare policy fields, saying, "Given his extensive background in medicine and healthcare policy, he is uniquely qualified to fill this role at a pivotal time for this important agency," further expressing confidence that Dr. Burke will show the same level of commitment in his new position as he did in his many years of public service. Kemp also expressed gratitude to Russel Carlson for his contributions and leadership, particularly highlighting Carlson's role in the launch of the Georgia Pathways to Coverage program.
Burke currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for the DCH, where he provides counsel on healthcare policy and quality improvement while directly overseeing the State Health Benefit Plan and the State Office of Rural Health — his expertise will be leveraged in his new role to oversee the agency's entire operations. Dr. Burke's background includes time as a state senator, contributing to key health committees, and experience in local governance and healthcare administration, an amalgam of experiences that have seasoned him for the multifaceted demands of leading the DCH.
With an educational foundation laid at Georgia Southwestern University, followed by medical school and specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Burke has dedicated over 27 years practicing in rural Georgia, bringing firsthand insight into the medical needs and challenges within these communities - a perspective likely beneficial in his new role as the steward of Georgia's healthcare system. Meanwhile, the outgoing Commissioner Carlson is recognized for his years of service, with Governor Kemp and family extending well-wishes for his future endeavors.
Dr. Burke, who will soon trade his CMO hat for the Commissioner's seat, resides in Bainbridge with his wife, Thea, and their family, maintaining roots in the community he has long served. As August 1 looms, stakeholders in Georgia’s healthcare system are poised to witness Burke's translation of past service and experience into his leadership at the Department of Community Health.
