The cityscape of Duluth will see a dance of infrastructure and pageantry this week, as the Festival of Sail brings tall ships to the harbor and a change in routine for the Aerial Lift Bridge and Minnesota Slip Bridge. The bridges will operate under a temporary schedule from Thursday, July 10, through Sunday, July 13, adhering to the times of the festival's happenings.
According to the City of Duluth's official announcement, the Aerial Lift Bridge is set to accommodate the influx of visitors and the movement of the grand vessels. On Thursday, with the Parade of Sail kicking off at 11:00 am, the bridge will lift for longer durations to allow the majestic ships to pass, potentially causing delays for those traversing in cars or on foot. After the parade, which is anticipated to conclude around 1:00 pm, the bridge will revert to its summer lifting schedule.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Slip Bridge will follow a rhythm distinct from its usual operations. It will rise to the occasion, lifting every 15 and 45 minutes past the hour. This is expected to enable smoother navigation for boats and visitors alike, though patience will be a requisite for drivers and pedestrians navigating this temporary change.
Traffic patterns in the areas surrounding Downtown and Canal Park will likely be ensnarled by the festival's events. With larger crowds descending upon the area, those planning to visit should expect and plan for significant traffic delays during the week. The City of Duluth has extended its thanks to residents and festival-goers for their understanding during these temporary changes.
