Yesterday morning, a residential fire claimed the lives of two cats on Capital Avenue in Battle Creek. According to WOODTV, the blaze began around 4:30 a.m., with flames initially seen climbing from the porch to the second level of the two-story dwelling. While the human occupants had vacated the premises prior to the arrival of emergency services, their feline companions were not as fortunate.
The Battle Creek Fire Department indicated their response was timely, with the first unit arriving less than five minutes after notification. In a release published by Battle Creek's official website, it disclosed, "The BCFD’s Car 3 arrived within four minutes of the initial call," demonstrating a swift reaction to the developing emergency. However, despite the speed of the response, and the coordinated effort involving multiple engines and rescue units, the cats could not be saved.
Containing the fire was accomplished within 20 minutes of firefighter intervention. The Battle Creek Fire Marshal's office is currently leading an investigation into the origins of the fire, which they believe started on the home's front porch. As per Battle Creek's official website, the estimated property and contents damage amounts to roughly $60,000.
The residence, a wood frame construction at 630 Capital Ave. NE, is owned by Ahmed Khalil. Not only did the structure suffer extensive damage on the porch and to the interior of the second floor, but the incident also extended to the attic space.
