Early Wednesday morning, a two-alarm fire wreaked havoc in an East Austin apartment complex, displacing scores of residents and sending a firefighter to recover from heat exhaustion. According to CBS Austin, the Austin Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire at 6407 Springdale Rd at approximately 2:20 a.m. Originally stemming from vehicle fires in the parking lot, the blaze quickly spread to an apartment building.

Officials confirmed that several apartments were affected, though no injuries among residents were reported. An update by KVUE noted that while the fire was fully extinguished by 6 a.m., it left 37 people, including 11 children, without a home. The American Red Cross stepped in to offer assistance to those impacted by the incident. A firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion during the response, although they are expected to recover.

The aftermath of the conflagration was a semblance of displacement and distress for the residents, with eight apartments sustaining damage and three cars burned to a crisp. Angelina Cadenas, a resident of the affected complex, described the chaos to KVUE. "We heard the smoke alarms come up, and our family was telling us, 'Come on, there's a fire, there's a fire, there's a fire,'" she recounted. "By the time everyone was out, it was already in flames and there was smoke everywhere and it started to collapse."

Amidst relief that personal injuries were averted, there were moments of panic over the whereabouts of pets. Cadenas’ family feared for their dog amidst the blaze, but reunited with their pet about 30 minutes later, unharmed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with KVUE reporting that arson dogs were brought to the scene to aid in determining what sparked the fire. The Austin Fire Department has not released further details on the investigation at this time.
