If you've ever wanted to see more green canopy in Edmond, now's the time to act. The Edmond Tree Grants program is offering local neighborhoods and public schools a chance to enhance their areas with free trees. According to a recent announcement by the City of Edmond, groups located within city limits are eligible to apply for seedlings, as well as 3-gallon or 15-gallon containerized trees. Even residences can get in on the action, with a special component for street trees.
But don't dally—the program will only accept applications while supplies last. This initiative is about more than just beautifying the community; it's about the serious perks that trees provide. Leigh Martin, the City of Edmond Urban Forester, highlights the array of benefits that trees bring to neighborhoods. "Trees are a valuable resource within the areas where people live and recreate, providing such benefits as improved air quality, cooler temperatures, UV ray protection, energy conservation, health benefits, beautification, and higher property values," Martin said in a statement obtained by the City of Edmond's official website.
It's not just about planting trees and walking away; the Edmond Tree Grants program is also an exercise in education and community engagement. Grant recipients will gain knowledge on proper tree care and planting techniques. This isn't a one-off affair, either. There's a plan for the long haul, ensuring these trees receive the care they merit. Working closely with the Urban Forestry Department, grant winners will integrate their newly gained understanding into the projects and have the chance to draw their communities or groups into the fold.
