The City of El Paso is preparing for a change in its financial oversight leadership as Chief Internal Auditor Edmundo Calderon has announced his retirement, which will be effective August 1. Calderon has been a pillar in the auditing department, clocking in 20 years of service with the city. The El Paso City Council accepted his retirement on July 18, a notification that came shortly after his two-decade anniversary with the City, according to the City of El Paso.

Calderon's contributions haven't gone unnoticed, with Mayor Renard Johnson praising his efforts to maintain transparency and accountability in the city's administration. "Mr. Calderon has been instrumental in promoting transparency, accountability, and strong internal controls across the organization," Mayor Johnson said, per City of El Paso, as he expressed gratitude for Calderon's professionalism and integrity. According to the City of El Paso, Calderon reflected on his career with elation, noting, "It has truly been my pleasure to serve the City Council, City Management, and most importantly, the taxpayers of the City of El Paso for the last 20 years."

The search for Calderon's interim replacement is in motion. The City Council announced plans to appoint an Interim Chief Internal Auditor to oversee operations while a permanent replacement is scouted. This decision ensures that there is no interruption in the city's audit functions and that the commitment to public service and financial oversight remains unshaken.

City Representative Dr. Josh Acevedo, who chairs the City’s Financial Oversight and Audit Committee (FOAC), also commended Calderon for his steadfast leadership and the robust audit processes established under his tenure. "Mr. Calderon brought structure, consistency, and high standards to the City’s audit processes," Rep. Acevedo told the City of El Paso. His noted commitment to oversight and good governance is credited with reinforcing public trust and enhancing the city's internal systems.
