The El Paso Community College (EPCC) Cosmetology Department hosted its annual 'Power of Pink' event, bringing together the community and cancer survivors for a day of beauty and support. In collaboration with local health partners, including UMC, Providence, Del Sol Medical Center, William Beaumont Breast Cancer Awareness Program, and the Rio Grande Cancer Foundation, EPCC provided makeovers to local cancer survivors. The event was part of an ongoing effort to not only offer beauty treatments but also provide a sense of normalcy and joy for those battling or recovering from cancer.

During the 'Power of Pink' event, students from the EPCC Cosmetology and Nail Tech Departments were allowed to apply their skills directly by serving those in need. Survivors were offered a full beauty treatment, which included hairstyling, makeup, and nail services, culminating in a professional photo to capture the moment. According to EPCC News, Norma Walsh, a cancer survivor, expressed her gratitude, saying, "I feel very special and I appreciate everything going on today. Glad I came, I am really excited."

The initiative by EPCC has been an ongoing tradition since 2005, growing annually to reach more members of the community. The treatments and services provided are completely free of charge for the survivors. This act of kindness by the students and the college is part of a larger kickoff party slated for September 26th at Tenet Healthcare. The professional pictures taken during 'Power of Pink' are set to be displayed at this event and around local hospitals throughout October, which marks National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Cecilia Dominguez, the EPCC Cosmetology Coordinator, spoke about the impact the event has on both the students and the survivors. "It is awesome to pamper them, the students really engage with the survivors," she said, as per EPCC News. The day aimed to provide more than beauty makeovers; it strove to create lasting memories and sorely needed smiles for individuals who have gone through unimaginable challenges.
