The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has added a new furry member to its ranks: K9 Mako. The German Shepherd, with a track record in narcotics detection and patrol work, was introduced as the latest addition to their K9 Unit. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Mako transferred from the Fountain Police Department, where deployed 85 times, and he contributed to numerous seizures and arrests.
During his tenure at the Fountain PD, extensively trained in narcotics detection, K9 Mako's efforts resulted in the seizure of various illegal substances, including methamphetamine and fentanyl pills, and 42 arrests. His work didn't just end with sniffing out drugs; Mako also assisted in patrol operations finding two firearms and four individuals leading to peaceful surrenders. Sheriff Joseph Roybal expressed his enthusiasm for the new addition, "Mako is a high-drive, hardworking K9 and a welcome addition, a manpower multiplier, and an important resource for our Office," as per the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Imported from the Czech Republic and trained by Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania, Mako was born on June 24, 2021. Despite his youthful age, Mako has earned a national certification in patrol and narcotics through the National Police Canine Association (NPCA). He's much more than a sniffer dog; he's an asset that brings a multifaceted skill set to the El Paso team.
