El Paso Community College Theatre is set to host the second edition of 'Tejano New Stages,' an event aimed at promoting original storytelling through script readings. This community-focused event is scheduled for August 1st and 2nd at the Forum Theatre. With 16 submissions on deck, EPCC Theatre Director Ted Karber, Jr., says the selections will be based on a mix of criteria, including EPCC student status, previous participation, and script length.
While the event takes a page from the now-defunct UTEP initiative 'New Lines Theatre,' 'Tejano New Stages' offers a unique platform for local voices to quickly be heard. Unlike more traditional theatrical productions, no sets or costumes will be used; actors will simply read the scripts aloud, allowing the audience to immerse themselves through the power of the written word. "This event gives writers a chance to hear their words in a safe and encouraging atmosphere," said Karber, Jr., as per EPCC News.
The free event encourages audience interaction, inviting constructive feedback for the writers. According to EPCC News, each performance will include a narrator to deliver stage directions while actors voice the characters. This format intends to assist playwrights to refine their work through the rehearsal process and subsequent public response.
The performances are scheduled to happen at 6:00 p.m. on the first and second of August at the EPCC Transmountain campus’s Forum Theatre. To truly engage spectators, the event showcases the diversity and talent of El Paso's writing community. "We encourage audiences to give constructive comments and observations," Karber, Jr. told the EPCC News.
