A Royal Oak landmark, Frentz & Sons Hardware, has announced their plans to close after a remarkable 93 years of continuous service to the community. A fixture since 1932 on Main Street, the family-owned business has been a reliable source for unique hardware and knowledgeable assistance tailored to the housing stock of the region.
In a heartfelt social media post, owners John, Mike, and Chip Frentz stated, per Frentz & Sons Hardware, "After more than 90 years in business and four generations of family serving you, we have decided to place our building and property up for sale." Citing "changing economic realities, rising costs, and the challenges of running a small business in today’s environment" as factors in their decision, the Frentz family also acknowledged their approaching retirement years in their announcement. However, a definite timeline for the closing has not been established, indicating that the store will remain operational for the presently unforeseen future.
Throughout its long tenure, Frentz & Sons Hardware has taken pride in more than just providing items off the shelves. It was their commitment to community and personalized service that made the store more than just a place to purchase nuts and bolts. "We’ve always prided ourselves on having what you need, especially regarding the unique hardware and knowledge that older homes require," expressed the Frentz family in a Facebook post, as reported by local news outlets.
Despite the impending closure, the Frentz family remains dedicated to serving their customers. Their legacy within the community is undeniably rich, with a history of contributing not just tools and supplies but also fostering neighborhood connections. As WXYZ reported, the Frentzs thanked customers for their "loyalty, friendship, and support over the decades," showing appreciation for the role residents have played in their business journey.
