After 32 years of rolling out colossal five-pound burritos, San Jose's Iguanas Home of The Burritozilla is wrapping up its operations. The downtown location on 300 S 3rd St is set to close its doors for the last time on Sunday, as KRON4 reported. The restaurant took to Instagram, expressing gratitude for the community's support and hinting at undisclosed future news.
Known for its familial atmosphere, Iguanas emphasized a strong bond with patrons and staff. "The Orozco family, as many of you know, is one of the most genuine and inspiring families in San Jose, if not the world. They’ve always put others first, and when you’re with them, you’re family," Iguanas stated in a social media post, per San José Foos. The message further highlighted the family's decision to venture into new passions and projects, leading to the retirement of the Iguanas Brand and Businesses.
The iconic establishment hit a notable peak when the "Burritozilla" was featured on the TV show "Man v. Food," where competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut famously devoured the gargantuan burrito in two minutes. Despite the imminent closure of their downtown hub, Iguanas leaped into San Antonio, opening a Texas location earlier this year, showing its first expansion outside of California, as the original publication from KRON4 mentioned.
With Iguanas' legacy standing tall in the form of an epic, five-pound burrito, the family joins the ranks of local legends who made a lasting impact on San Jose's culinary scene. As told by Iguanas Home of The Burritozilla, the Iguanas family, more than just taqueria owners, became part of the local business fabric in San Jose. Customers who wish to experience the Iguanas' magic one last time are encouraged to visit before the final closing day.
