Brigham Jones, a former deputy from Clermont County, has been given a sentence of 90 years to life after a conviction on over thirty charges, including child rape and sexual battery. This outcome underscores the gravity of crimes committed by someone who was once entrusted to uphold the law.
In the courtroom, emotions ran high as a victim, formerly a child under 13 when the abuse began, addressed her abuser during sentencing. "You took my innocence like it was nothing," she said, according to LOCAL12 News. The report detailed her harrowing experience, which began back in 2012 and ultimately led to Jones's fall from grace. Another victim, who Jones assaulted during an unrelated investigation, expressed that the punishment wasn't sufficient for the damage inflicted: "I don't feel like it was enough," she bravely stated per the same source.
Assistant Prosecutor Christina Dattilo highlighted the betrayal of trust inherent in the crimes, noting to WLWT that one victim was essentially confined to her room for nearly a year following the revelation of her abuse. Both the prosecutor’s office and the courage of the victims played key roles in ensuring justice was served.
"Her bravery is astonishing," said Clermont County Prosecutor Mark Tekulve to LOCAL12 News, referring to the young woman who came forward. Reflecting a commitment to justice regardless of the perpetrator's profession, Tekulve reiterated to WLWT, "If you commit an offense against a child of this nature, we don't care who you are, we're going to pursue it, and we're going to work hard to convict you."
Judge Kevin Miles noted the absence of remorse from Jones during the proceedings, as mentioned in a WCPO report. Jones had the chance to speak but opted to remain silent. The victims, however, took the opportunity to voice the unspeakable torment inflicted upon them, vowing never to go silent again. Their statements served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the aftermath of such profound betrayal and abuse.
