Tragedy struck on Interstate 25 early Monday when a vehicle collided with a highway wall and erupted in flames, resulting in the death of one individual. This incident occurred on the northbound side of the highway, south of 84th Avenue, in Adams County. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) was quick to respond, as noted by KDVR.
The fire and emergency response led to a temporary closure of two right lanes on northbound I-25, leading to a substantial traffic buildup. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, this stretch lies between U.S. 36 and exit 219 for 84th Avenue. The congestion amassed here was significant enough to disrupt the morning commute as CSP did not immediately provide an estimate on when roads would reopen, as confirmed by CBS News Colorado.
The victim inside the crashed vehicle, who was alone at the time of the fatal accident, has not yet been named. It's expected that the Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the identity once the next of kin are notified. The chain of events began with a report of a car fire, which, upon arrival, state troopers discovered had escalated following the impact with the side highway wall, according to The Denver Post.
State Patrol spokesperson Gabriel Moltrer shared with The Denver Post that, unfortunately, the individual succumbed to their injuries sustained in the crash. As for now, northbound traffic on I-25 was being managed to navigate past the scene, albeit slowly. CSP and local fire departments, including Adams County Fire Rescue, worked collaboratively to manage the incident and to also safely conduct an investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash. The response efforts and ensuing investigations are ongoing, with updates to follow as new information emerges.
