A former substitute teacher, Timothy Allen Daugherty, has been sentenced to 10-15 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting multiple young girls, all between the ages of 9 and 11, during his tenure at Spring Mills Elementary School in Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan. According to CBS News, Daugherty was found guilty on six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in May and received his sentence yesterday.
In the wake of the sentencing, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald expressed her gratitude for the victims' bravery, stating, "I am grateful that the victims spoke up about this abuse. It’s not an easy thing to do." McDonald's comments further delineated the perversion of trust that Daugherty capitalized on, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The sentence aims to reflect the severity of the betrayal perpetrated against the students and their families.
A civil lawsuit is currently being prepared by the victims' families, represented by attorney Ven Johnson. "This is an important first step toward full and complete accountability, but it will never erase the harm done to these children and their families," Johnson emphasized, as he spoke of an institutional failure that requires exposure and reform. This sentiment echoes the drive for systemic change, a topic that Johnson reportedly discussed at length in a statement to CBS News.
During the court proceedings, Judge Yasmine Isshak Poles condemned Daugherty's conduct, rejecting his attempt at an apology, "So I don't really hear you taking responsibility. I hear you saying that I'm the adult here, so I guess I gotta take the fall for this thing," she criticized, as recounted by FOX 2 Detroit. In her sentencing remarks, she rebuked the former teacher for exploiting his authority and deceptively engaging in predatory behavior, touching students under the guise of affection.
Huron Valley Schools has released a statement, ensuring the public that student safety remains a top priority and acknowledging the courage of the students and families involved, "We are grateful to the students and families who came forward and we thank law enforcement for their thorough handling of this matter," the statement detailed, a promise of support through school counselors for those needing assistance as mentioned by FOX 2 Detroit. Daugherty will now join the sex offender registry and, if paroled, will be subject to a lifetime GPS tether.
