Devil's Den State Park, a typically serene retreat known for its hiking trails and geological wonders, became the scene of a grisly double homicide last weekend. Charged with the crime, 28-year-old James Andrew McGann, former teacher at Broken Arrow Public Schools and most recently employed at a school in Arkansas, faces two counts of capital murder following the deaths of Clinton and Cristen Brink. As reported by News9, the Brinks were attacked in the presence of their young daughters, who are now in the care of family members.
McGann's arrest yesterday comes after the Arkansas State Police and the FBI worked together, using public tips and video footage to locate him. Ineffective in preventing this tragedy, McGann had seemingly passed all required background checks for employment in both Oklahoma school districts he had served, according to details revealed to KTUL. His reasons for the killings remain unknown.
The response to this senseless act of violence echoed from school administrators to state officials. "Our hearts are with the family and loved ones who have suffered this tragic loss," Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders was quoted during a press conference, as per the coverage by News9. She asserted that Arkansas law enforcement would bring justice to those who perpetrate such violence.
While currently in custody at the Washington County jail, a lawyer for McGann could not be located, and attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful so far. Described as committed to student safety, Sand Springs Public Schools also confirmed McGann's previous employment, explaining in a statement obtained by KTUL that "Every employee undergoes a mandatory background check for the district when they are hired."
