The call has been issued for champions of inclusivity in Fort Collins. The city’s Disability Advisory Board is currently seeking nominations for individuals, businesses, and agencies that have prioritized the betterment of life for people with disabilities. The awards aim to shine a light on those who go beyond in assisting this community.

With nominations open through August 15, three categories are spotlighted this year for the 2025 Community Recognition Awards. As per the City of Fort Collins, they're on the lookout for educators and trainers, organizations and teams, as well as individuals who have stepped up to the plate, making Fort Collins a haven for people with disabilities. It's time to nominate the unsung heroes who embody the spirit of a more accessible world, with an eye for those making strides in cohesion and support.

Shifting the spotlight, there's the Educator/Community Trainer Award, open to those enlightening people with disabilities or teaching the broader community about inclusion in hiring and support. The second, an Organization/Team Award, recognizes a group creating inclusive spaces for disabled individuals to thrive, nurturing ADA law compliance and accessibility. Lastly, the Dorothy Lasley Memorial Award commends a person with a disability, an active voice in advocacy and barrier removal, honorably remembering Dorothy Lasley’s tireless efforts.

Nominations are not limited by Fort Collins residency, but the impact must be local. Potential awardees are being evaluated on several criteria, as detailed in the city's news release, including their advocacy, educational efforts, and the advancement of accessibility. "Any person, business, or agency is eligible for consideration," according to City of Fort Collins. The Disability Advisory Board will handle the difficult job of selecting the award recipients among a pool, hopefully, as diverse as the community it serves.
