Fort Worth City Manager Jesus "Jay" Chapa recently announced a shortlist of four finalists for the position of police chief, a role crucial for maintaining security and overseeing the Fort Worth Police Department's staff, which comprises 1,896 sworn officers and 574 professional staff members. Following a national search spearheaded by Mosaic Public Partners, which attracted 51 applications, the city has narrowed the field to four high-caliber candidates adept in law enforcement leadership.
The search process, which drew applicants from 15 states, reflected a gender disparity with 92% male candidates and a mere 8% female. This gender gap remains a pressing issue within the fields of law enforcement agency leadership positions, where diversity and representational equity are sought. According to the City of Fort Worth's official announcement, the finalists were selected after thorough interview rounds, shortlisted from an impressive array of law enforcement professionals.
Among the finalists is Chief Robert A. Alldredge, Jr., an internal candidate with over three decades in law enforcement and 26 years at FWPD. Another strong contender is Chief Eddie Garcia, former Dallas Police Chief and currently an Assistant City Manager in Austin, known for initiatives that bolster transparency and community relations. The list also includes Chief Vernon Hale of the Prince George’s County Police Department, with over 30 years in the field, and Deputy Chief Emada Tingirides from LAPD, who has commanded Operations Central Bureau and aimed her career at bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community.
As per the City of Fort Worth, Chapa highlighted the "diversity, depth, and caliber of candidates," emphasizing the importance of the role for the city's future. To foster community involvement in the selection process, a community forum is scheduled for August 14th at City Hall, allowing residents to hear from the finalist on issues vital to the city's well-being. Participation is encouraged, with an online submission link provided for suggesting forum questions, though it will close on August 8.
