A house fire in East Falmouth has injured four people and resulted in the tragic death of two dogs, as reported by Falmouth Fire/Rescue on social media. The blaze, which erupted in the basement of a home on Lakeshore Drive, was met with a prompt response from Engine 20 of the Hatchville Fire Station after a call was made to Falmouth Emergency Communications at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters were greeted with heavy smoke billowing from the structure, though all occupants had safely evacuated. Despite the swift action to combat the inferno from within, deteriorating floor conditions on the first level forced the crew to retreat, necessitating a second alarm and a more defensive exterior attack. After taming the flames and dispersing the smoke, fire personnel were able to reenter the building to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire, as detailed in the official Falmouth Fire/Rescue Facebook post.
The aftermath of the incident saw three individuals receiving care at Falmouth Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries while a firefighter was also evaluated on the scene for a minor injury. The loss of the family's two dogs in the conflagration marks a somber note in an already harrowing event. The cause of the fire is currently under joint investigation by various agencies, including the Falmouth Fire Rescue-Fire Investigation Unit, Falmouth Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
Expressions of gratitude were extended to mutual aid fire companies that not only assisted at the scene but also ensured town-wide coverage during the crisis. Special acknowledgment was given to the Providence Canteen from the Special Signal Fire Association for the rehabilitation services provided to the fire crews who battled the blaze and faced the day’s challenges. Details concerning the fire's origin and subsequent developments remain forthcoming as investigations continue.
