Over the weekend, local residents were given a rare opportunity to receive free health care services, no strings attached, at St. Xavier High School. The event was a collaborative effort between the University of Cincinnati's student chapter of Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps (RAM), Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and RAM volunteers. It was a haven for those requiring medical, dental, and vision care but facing the harsh realities of inaccessible or unaffordable health services.
"We are offering care for anyone and everyone. No ID required. No insurance required," told UC student and volunteer Kevin Krebs via UC News, to WLWT-TV News 5 and WKRC-TV/Local 12. His passion for serving Cincinnati residents, a vibrant community shadowed by the plight of the uninsured, was palpable. Hundreds received a range of services, from eye exams to dental work, on a first-come, first-served basis, underscoring the dire need for such care in the community.
In addition to the medical services provided, Anthem contributed to the overall wellness of the community with its wellness and resource fair. It brought together local nonprofits and health care organizations to extend support beyond immediate medical needs. In a meaningful gesture, the fair included a school backpack giveaway, perfectly timed for families gearing up for the new academic year, fitting right into the ethos of the weekend's event.
Each encounter at the clinic painted a picture of the profound impact of the student-led initiative. Simple yet essential services like eyeglass prescriptions, fillings, extractions, and general checkups were not just medical procedures but a lifeline for many. As Krebs articulated, as shared by UC News, "In Cincinnati, it's a great city. A very vibrant city. But a lot of its population is uninsured and not covered by health care. They don’t have the access to care that a lot of people enjoy. And it's really important that we give them that access and the opportunity to get the care that they so desperately need."
