Leadership changes are underway at Galveston Island Beach Patrol following the Galveston Park Board’s decision to officially terminate Chief Peter Davis. Davis had previously been placed on administrative leave earlier this year amid ongoing investigations into the operations of the Park Board and Beach Patrol. The decision to remove him was announced on Monday. Interim CEO Marty Miles commented on the action, stating, "It is never an easy decision to remove an employee. Let me assure you, every factor was taken into account," as reported by ABC13.

Allegations have arisen regarding the use of Beach Patrol resources, specifically involving Chief Davis’ lodging arrangements for visiting members of the National Chilean Lifeguard Federation. The group reportedly stayed in the Stewart Beach Pavilion, which was in poor condition at the time. Miles emphasized, "But my number one priority at the end of the day is to have the right person overseeing the program that is responsible for the safety of every person who visits our beaches," in a statement reported by ABC13.

Following the termination, Austin Kirwin, who has served for 14 years with the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, stepped up as Interim Chief. With decades of experience, Kirwin has been appointed to lead and uphold the legacy of one of the nation’s leading beach patrol programs. Marty Miles conveyed assurance regarding the transition, saying, "The park board is committed to protecting the residents and visitors who swim in the Gulf and will ensure resources are continued to be placed into this vital program," as FOX 26 Houston reported.

As part of its efforts to navigate current challenges, the Park Board has begun reviewing policies and procedures, including updates on contracting, conflicts of interest, and personnel management. The statement noted that these revisions are intended to strengthen Park Board operations. Addressing concerns related to Mr. Davis' leadership, the Park Board aims to uphold Galveston's standards for safety and hospitality. "Galveston has one of the top beach patrol programs in the country, and it is important to residents and visitors that it remains strong," Miles was quoted in the release obtained by FOX 26 Houston.
