A domestic disturbance call in Garland on Sunday afternoon escalated when police officers encountered an armed individual, resulting in the involvement of the SWAT team and ultimately, a tragic end. According to a news release from the Garland Police Department, officers were dispatched to a complex at the 600 block of Broadway Commons Boulevard after reports surfaced involving a weapon just after 3:20 p.m.
The situation intensified as the responding officers observed a male wielding a handgun. The man, responding to the presence of law enforcement, vanished back into an apartment. SWAT negotiators entered into an hours-long communication with the man in a bid to coax the situation down to a more manageable silence.
It was confirmed by the department that the male subject had perished from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This conclusion came at the end of a standoff in which, fortunately, no other injuries were reported. The male's identity has, at this juncture, been withheld while the investigation carries on.
