In response to the scorching temperatures that have become a mainstay of this year's summer, the City of Gastonia is taking preemptive measures to help its residents find respite from the heat. As announced by the City of Gastonia, a new set of guidelines for the cooling station at 107 South Broad Street has been released, aiming to offer a reliable cooling refuge tailored to the day's predicted heat levels.
Operating decisions will be made based on National Weather Service forecasts at 10:00 a.m., 48 hours in advance, thus providing adequate setup time for staff and the necessary logistics to convert the space between an outdoor and indoor haven, depending on the mercury's climb, these guidelines state that when the forecasted high is between 90 and 94 degrees, the station will operate outdoors but will move indoors for heights of 95 degrees or above, keeping doors open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Additionally, local community centers and county libraries are also available as alternative cool spaces.
The cooling station isn't without its rules; to maintain an environment conducive to safety and respect, restrictions include wearing shirts, shoes, and appropriate clothing at all times, and a strict no list covering food, lying down, weapons, smoking, alcohol, drugs, and more. No profanity or inappropriate behavior will be tolerated at the station, and loitering outside designated areas is also prohibited. After-hours trespassing is off-limits, ensuring that the space can be secured properly once operation hours cease. These measures are in place to ensure the station serves its function without becoming a site of discomfort or harm for those seeking solace from the heat.
This plan is set to be in place through August 6, with a City Council review scheduled for August 5 to discuss the initiative's status and make any necessary adjustments.
