Ware County, located in the southeast region of Georgia, became the site of a tragic incident last week. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently looking into the unexpected deaths of two young men, Joey Nelson, Jr., 18, and Randall Martin III, 19. Both individuals hailed from the town of Waycross, as reported by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Last Thursday, deputies responded to a distressing 911 call just past 10 p.m. near Alton Circle. In an unfortunate turn of events, after a day spent fishing, Nelson, Jr., and Martin III were discovered by family members deceased beside their vehicle, which when found by family members, had prompted an immediate 911 call, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Initial findings from the ongoing investigation lean towards an unanticipated severe thunderstorm as the precipitating factor in the tragedy. Both men, apparently attempting to seek shelter, were struck by lightning on their way back to the car, which had also suffered a lightning strike, as found at the scene, as per the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Further insights into the deaths will be sought through autopsies conducted by the GBI Medical Examiner's Office in Pooler. While the GBI presses on with their inquiries, they are urging anyone with relevant information to step forward. Information can be relayed to the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at (912) 389-4103 or the Ware County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 287-4326.
