As summer temperatures rise, Geauga County officials urge residents to stay vigilant against the heat. In a recent social media post, Sheriff Scott A. Hildenbrand of the Geauga County Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of taking precautions during periods of high heat. "The forecast is calling for high temperatures and we want everyone to take the proper precautions to stay safe and healthy," stated the Sheriff.
Hildenbrand's post offered a series of advice intended to help community members cope with the scorching weather. He advised limiting outdoor activities, particularly between the hours of 11 AM and 4 PM, when the sun is at its fiercest. The emphasis was on the importance of staying in air-conditioned areas, and if one must be outside, to wear light clothing and a hat. Moreover, the Sheriff emphasized the importance of staying hydrated with plenty of water while avoiding dehydrating substances like alcohol and caffeine.
Beyond personal health, the Sheriff underscored the community's responsibility toward each other. Echoing Hildenbrand's sentiments, the post called for residents to "Please check on children, the elderly, and anyone who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness." The Geauga County Sheriff's Office left no margin for error regarding the dangers of leaving children or pets in vehicles, stating the imperative to never do so, "even for a moment."
Attention to pets was also a significant aspect of the advisory. Owners are encouraged to keep their animals indoors or, at the very least, sheltered from direct sunlight. A practical tip was also shared, to always "test pavement before going for a walk to protect their paws" from scalding surfaces.
