Following ceremonies in Fort Worth, Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law two significant pieces of legislation aimed at bolstering Texas' border security measures, as reported on the official governor's website yesterday. Senate Bill 8 and Senate Bill 36 are designed to enhance the collaboration between Texas law enforcement and federal agencies, with Abbott emphasizing their importance for ensuring state safety. "The goal in signing this legislation is the goal that you and I have everyday, and that is to make our state more safe," Abbott is quoted by the Office of the Texas Governor.
During the event, which was attended by over 550 sheriffs and various officials, the governor acknowledged the support of former President Donald Trump and collaboration with his administration in bolstering homeland security. Notably, the signing coincided with a fireside chat held with U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan, where discussions covered both disaster response and the ongoing Operation Lone Star, which Abbott stated serves as a blueprint for federal border security strategies now; the governor also applauded first responders for their bravery and President Trump's swift actions in deploying federal resources for disaster-stricken areas of Texas.
Senate Bill 8, sponsored by Senator Charles Schwertner and Representative David Spiller, seeks to enforce federal immigration laws by encouraging local law enforcement agencies to enter into 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Senate Bill 36, sponsored by Senator Tan Parker and Representative Cole Hefner, calls for the establishment of a Homeland Security Division within the Texas Department of Public Safety to lead a variety of security initiatives.
In his remarks reported by official channels, Abbott further emphasized the integral role of Texas sheriffs and law enforcement in disaster responses and everyday policing to ensure the ongoing safety of all Texans. Accompanying him at the signing ceremony, among others, were Senators Brian Birdwell and Joan Huffman; Representatives David Cook, Mitch Little, AJ Louderback, Jared Patterson, Katrina Pierson, Nate Schatzline, and Tony Tinderholt; and Franklin County Sheriff Ricky Jones, collectively demonstrating a strong political commitment to state-level security efforts.
