In the wake of what some are calling catastrophic flooding, Governor Greg Abbott has stepped in to announce a vital injection of funds to Texas hospitals suffering from the calamity's impact. Specifically, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will be dispensing over $1.9 million in emergency grant funding to hospitals in Kerrville and Llano that were hit hardest by the recent floods, as reported yesterday.
Describing the grants, Abbott said, "Our healthcare professionals are working tirelessly on the front lines to help heal Texans who have been injured during these devastating floods." He went on to clarify that the $1.9 million in emergency funding is intended not only to repair damages to the hospital infrastructure and equipment but also "to provide staffing support, and address any operational issues to ensure Texans continue to receive the quality care they need." This statement was obtained from the official announcement on the Office of the Texas Governor.
The beneficiary institutions – Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville and Llano Regional Hospital – will receive $1.5 million and more than $396,000, respectively. These emergency hardship grants aim to cover unplanned expenses that the facilities have incurred due to the flooding.
HHS Executive Commissioner Cecile Erwin Young emphasized the urgency and the commitment to support, expressing gratitude for "the opportunity to support these hospitals in Kerrville and Llano as they continue to provide much-needed services to their communities." According to the same official announcement of the Office of the Texas Governor, Young stressed that their priority is "to serve Texans" and noted that "these resources allow these hospitals to continue helping those who need it most right now."
The HHSC is responsible for providing grant funding and administering programs for rural hospitals, aligning with the Rural Hospital Services Strategic Plan – a framework dedicated to ensuring that rural Texans maintain access to hospital services.
