A Hammond resident received a federal sentence which amounts to time already served in prison for drug possession charges. According to a statement from the Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson, 25-year-old KYLIN SEXTON was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown to time served for holding marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride. The sentencing took place on July 24. On top of his sentence, SEXTON has been mandated to three years of supervised release, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Dispatched to a retail establishment following a complaint, Ponchatoula Police Department arrived to find SEXTON and his cousin, Tyshon Coleman, inside of a vehicle on May 18, 2022. The complaint alleged Tyshon Coleman, was in possession of a firearm, and SEXTON ended up being on the wrong side of a drug bust. Resisting officer orders, Coleman's refusal to show his hands escalated the situation, ultimately leading to the discovery of a Glock firearm equipped with an illegal conversion device. Coleman later faced charges for weapons possession and was sentenced in 2024 to nearly nine years in prison.

During this altercation, having located SEXTON in the driver's seat, police found a green backpack on the floorboard that contained substances packaged for distribution. Inside, marijuana and cocaine hydrochloride were stowed, ready for what officers would assume was lined up for street-level sales. The subsequent investigation involved both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as the New Orleans Police Department.

Both SEXTON and Coleman faced severe repercussions for their actions, with Coleman already serving his 106-month term as of December last year. Assigned to the Violent Crime/Strike Force Unit, Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed led the prosecution.
