During a routine week of patrolling for impaired drivers, Hawai‘i Island police netted 11 individuals driving under the influence between Monday of last week and this past Sunday. According to the Hawaii Police Department, these arrests also included three traffic collisions, one of which involved a driver who was not yet 21 years old.

In a broader view, DUI arrests on the island have experienced a marginal decrease when comparing current year-to-date figures with last year's. A total of 460 arrests were made so far in 2025, whereas there were 481 by this time in 2024 – a small dip of 4.5 percent. Meanwhile, major crashes increased by 5.46 percent, 421 this year over the 494 in the same span of the previous year.

The recent data illustrates a more promising trend in terms of fatal crashes on Hawai‘i Island's roads. The number of fatal crashes dipped by 23.53 percent to 13, while the fatality count fell by 26.32 percent to 14, when compared to last year's figures over the same time frame, which stood at 17 fatal crashes resulting in 19 deaths. These reductions reflect the determined efforts of local law enforcement agencies to curb traffic-related deaths.

Notably, the non-traffic fatality toll, which enumerates deadly incidents outside the public roadways, has remained static at zero, mirroring last year's count for the same period. As the island moves forward into the later half of the year, police are committed to maintaining the presence of DUI roadblocks and patrols across the region.
