The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a heat advisory for Seattle and surrounding areas, with temperatures set to rise into the mid 90s today, according to their latest weather forecast. The hot conditions are expected to last until 10 PM PDT this evening, posing a moderate risk of heat-related impacts for the region.
Residents are being urged to take precautions, particularly those sensitive to heat, including the very young, the elderly, and people with health conditions; because heat will "significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses," especially for those without effective cooling or adequate hydration, the advisory cautions. A statement obtained by the NWS recommends staying hydrated, remaining indoors, ideally in air-conditioned environments, avoiding direct sun exposure, and checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbors during this time.
In terms of temperature specifics, the National Weather Service anticipates high temperatures today in the 80s to mid-90s range with low temperatures not dropping much below the low to mid-60s. The advisory also addresses workplace safety, recommending that outdoor workers reschedule strenuous activities to cooler early morning or evening hours, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments, and know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke as wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible, to reduce risk. If anyone is overcome by heat, they should be moved to a cool, shaded location, and in cases of heat stroke, which is an emergency, call 9 1 1.
