An undercover sting in Riverview nearly turned deadly last week when a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office detective found himself on the wrong end of a gun during a botched narcotics operation. The incident took place at the Reflections Apartment Complex where, according to an HCSO Facebook post, the detective was allegedly meant to carry out a controlled purchase.
Instead, he was met with the barrel of a gun as two suspects, identified as 17-year-old Daryl Cole and 18-year-old Christopher Samuels, decided to flip the script. The staged buy quickly escalated, with the suspects reportedly demanding cash and attempting to commandeer the detective's vehicle. Fortunately, their attempt to hijack the car was thwarted, leading them to flee on foot. No injuries were reported in the chaos that ensued.
Sheriff Chad Chronister didn't mince words when he addressed the severity of the situation. "In a split second, this incident could have ended in tragedy," he expressed in a statement. "The fact that our detective walked away unharmed is nothing short of a miracle." His sentiment is a stark reminder of the inherent risks law enforcement officers face, a reality that the community grapples with as it confronts the violence simmering within its midst, as per the HCSO's release.
The HCSO has been active in issuing reminders of the dangers their deputies encounter. "Our deputies put their lives on the line every single day to protect this community from the violent individuals who threaten it, and we will never stop pursuing justice," Chronister stated. The suspects, now on the radar of the Special Investigations Division Gang Unit, are sure to feel the heat as authorities continue to seek retribution in the wake of the armed robbery."
